Marriage & Family Therapy

Marriage and Family Therapy can be helpful in a variety of situations. Marriage and family therapy can include one, some, or all members of a family. This approach takes into account individuals and the relationships between individuals. Many people use  a marriage and family therapist to help with problems between couples, parenting concerns, and general family functioning as a whole. It is not unusual for a problem that affects one family member to affect the whole family.

When people are having problems in their relationship, coming together for counseling can often be helpful. Working with couples often allows for a greater understanding and improved communication. It may allow for each individual to gain clarity about their needs and desires, as well as ways that they can change their behavior to improve their level of satisfaction in the relationship. Other times only one member of the couple feels comfortable visiting a counselor. Parenting

Parenting is a difficult process regardless of age and experience. Kids don't come with owner's manuals, and each child is different. Family therapy can help with issues like sibling rivalry, school and social problems, and  discipline. It can also help parents managing emotions and understand normal childhood development. Ideally family therapy can help parents recognize and prevent problems before they become too big to manage.

     Family

wpeD.jpg (23181 bytes)Family counseling is different from couples counseling and dealing with parenting issues although it may encompass both. From a the perspective of a marriage and family therapist, the actions or behavior of any one family member can have a reverberating effect on the entire family, even if they don't live together. Family counseling can work in any number of ways, but very often it means that all or some of the family members attend a session. At times family counseling can focus on the family of origin and how early experiences have an effect on the current situation.
